Sample questions with answers

These are the questions in the free test above, with answers. Try the test first. You'll learn more by getting some wrong.

1. In an enterprise-wide financial crime risk assessment, residual risk is:
Answer: The risk remaining after the effect of controls is considered. Residual risk = inherent risk adjusted for control effectiveness. It's compared with risk appetite to decide whether more action is needed.
2. Which factors usually make up inherent financial crime risk?
Answer: Customers, products and services, geographies and delivery channels. These four risk categories (plus transaction types and volumes) are the standard building blocks recommended by FATF and most supervisors.
3. A bank's risk assessment rates its correspondent banking business as high inherent risk with weak controls. What should it do?
Answer: Develop and track remediation to strengthen controls, or reduce exposure, until residual risk is within appetite. When residual risk exceeds appetite, management must act: improve controls, limit or exit exposure, and track actions to completion.
4. How often should an institution's financial crime risk assessment be updated?
Answer: Regularly (at least annually at many firms) and whenever there are significant changes such as new products, markets or threats. Risk assessments must stay current. Trigger events include acquisitions, new products, new geographies, regulatory changes and emerging typologies.
5. A national risk assessment (NRA) helps a financial institution mainly by:
Answer: Identifying the main ML/TF threats and vulnerabilities in the country, which the institution should reflect in its own assessment. FATF Recommendation 1 asks countries to assess their risks. Firms use NRA findings as an input, not as a substitute for their own assessment.
6. Large-scale exits of whole customer categories (such as all money services businesses) to avoid risk rather than manage it are known as:
Answer: De-risking. FATF and supervisors warn that indiscriminate de-risking can push activity into less transparent channels and harm financial inclusion. The expected approach is case-by-case risk management.
7. A risk appetite statement for financial crime should:
Answer: Set out the types and level of financial crime risk the board is willing to accept, with measurable limits or indicators. No firm can have zero financial crime risk. A good statement combines qualitative tolerance (for example, zero tolerance for knowingly facilitating crime) with measurable KRIs.
8. Which is the best example of a key risk indicator (KRI) for an AML program?
Answer: Rising number of high-risk customers with overdue KYC reviews. KRIs signal changing exposure or control weakness. Overdue high-risk reviews, alert backlogs and sanctions screening gaps are classic examples.
9. Why do AFC risk managers use thresholds (for example green, amber and red) on KRIs?
Answer: To trigger escalation and action when risk moves outside agreed tolerance. Thresholds turn data into decisions: amber prompts management attention, red prompts escalation to senior committees and remediation.
10. A new real-time payments product is being launched. When should the financial crime risk team first get involved?
Answer: At the design stage, through a new product risk assessment. New product approval processes should assess financial crime risk before launch so controls are built in, not bolted on.
11. The board's main role in AFC risk management is to:
Answer: Set the tone and risk appetite, oversee the program and hold management accountable. Boards provide oversight and challenge. They need clear, timely management information to do so.
12. Why is model risk management important for an AFC program?
Answer: Screening and monitoring models can be wrong or degrade, so they need validation, documentation and ongoing performance testing. Guidance such as the US interagency model risk management guidance (SR 11-7) applies to AML models. Poorly tuned models create both missed risk and wasted effort.
13. Which development has most increased fraud and money laundering risk in instant payment systems?
Answer: Irrevocable, near-instant transfers that give little time to stop authorized push payment scams or mule transfers. Speed and finality help criminals. Firms respond with real-time behavioral analytics, confirmation of payee and better inbound (mule) monitoring.
14. A risk manager finds that the business line has repeatedly overridden high-risk customer ratings to speed up onboarding. What does this show?
Answer: A governance and culture weakness that should be escalated and corrected. Overrides need documented justification and second-line challenge. Patterns of unjustified overrides show weak culture and control and must be reported.
15. In many major AML enforcement cases, which root cause appears most often?
Answer: Weak governance and leadership that allowed growth to outpace controls and ignored warnings. Enforcement actions repeatedly cite failures of tone at the top, under-resourced compliance and ignored red flags or audit findings.
