How to pass the AFC Auditor exam

  • Think like an auditor, not an operator: questions ask how you would test, evidence and rate a control, not how you'd run it.
  • Independence and objectivity come up often. Know what impairs them and what to do about it.
  • Learn sampling basics: when to use statistical versus judgmental samples, and what to do when you find exceptions.
  • 90 questions in 3 hours is 2 minutes each. Scenario questions are long, so keep moving.

Sample questions with answers

These are the questions in the free test above, with answers. Try the test first. You'll learn more by getting some wrong.

1. Under the IIA's Three Lines Model, internal audit is:
Answer: The third line, giving independent assurance to the board. The first line (business) owns risk, the second line (compliance, risk) oversees it, and internal audit provides independent, objective assurance to the governing body.
2. To protect its independence, the chief audit executive should report functionally to:
Answer: The board or its audit committee. A functional reporting line to the board or audit committee, with administrative reporting to senior management, protects audit's independence.
3. An auditor who designed the bank's transaction monitoring scenarios last year is asked to audit them now. What is the main concern?
Answer: Self-review threat: the auditor would be assessing their own work, which impairs objectivity. IIA standards say auditors should not assess operations they were responsible for recently (generally within the previous year). Assign someone else or disclose the impairment.
4. In a risk-based audit plan, how are AFC audit areas usually prioritized?
Answer: By the inherent risk of each area and the strength of its controls, plus regulatory findings and changes. Risk-based planning uses the AFC risk assessment, prior findings, regulatory feedback and business changes to decide where audit effort goes.
5. Before fieldwork, why does the audit team agree the scope with the auditee?
Answer: To confirm objectives, areas, period and timing so the audit is complete and efficient. Scoping sets objectives, boundaries and timing. The auditee is informed and consulted, but audit decides the scope independently.
6. An auditor wants to know whether KYC files are complete. Re-checking a sample of files against the bank's CDD procedure is an example of:
Answer: Substantive (detailed) testing of control operating effectiveness. Design testing asks whether a control is built to work; operating effectiveness testing (such as sample re-performance) shows whether it actually works over the period.
7. When is a statistical sample preferred over a judgmental sample?
Answer: When the auditor needs to project results to the whole population with a known confidence level. Statistical sampling lets results be extrapolated with measurable confidence. Judgmental samples target known risk but can't be projected to the population.
8. What does a 'walkthrough' in an AFC audit involve?
Answer: Following one transaction or process end to end to confirm how the control actually works. Walkthroughs confirm the auditor's understanding of a process and its controls before detailed testing.
9. During testing of transaction monitoring, the auditor should check data integrity mainly to confirm that:
Answer: All relevant transactions and customer data flow completely and accurately into the monitoring system. If data feeds are incomplete or wrong, scenarios can't fire. Data lineage and reconciliation testing is a core part of TM audits.
10. An auditor tests 60 closed alerts and finds 9 where the rationale doesn't support the decision. What should the auditor do?
Answer: Evaluate the exceptions, find the root cause and consider whether the issue is systemic before rating the finding. A 15% exception rate needs root-cause analysis (training, procedures, workload) and may mean wider testing or a look-back. Auditors don't fix the work themselves.
11. A well-written audit finding normally includes:
Answer: Criteria, condition, cause, effect (risk) and a recommendation. The 5 Cs structure (criteria, condition, cause, consequence, corrective action) makes findings clear and actionable.
12. Who is responsible for fixing an audit finding?
Answer: Management, through an agreed action plan with an owner and due date. Management owns remediation. Audit tracks the actions and later validates that they were completed and work.
13. Management reports that an AML audit issue has been fixed. What should audit do before closing it?
Answer: Validate the fix with evidence and, where needed, re-test the control. Issue validation confirms the action was completed and the control now works. Closing on management's word alone is a common audit weakness.
14. The US BSA requires independent testing of the AML program. Who can perform it?
Answer: Internal audit, outside auditors, consultants or other qualified parties who are independent of the AML function. Independent testing must be done by qualified people who don't perform or oversee the functions being tested.
15. The audit committee should receive which kind of AFC audit reporting?
Answer: Overall opinions, significant findings, overdue actions and themes across audits. The board needs a clear view of AFC control health, including significant and overdue issues, to meet its oversight duty.
